June 21, 2010 - For the second year, St. Charles Health System has been named one of the Top_50_Health_Systems in the country by Thomson Reuters.  This puts St. Charles in the top 5% of all health systems nationwide for our quality and patient outcomes.  A total of 252 hospital systems in the U.S. were ranked, four of whom are in Oregon and eight in the Pacific Northwest.  Key performance measures for the ratings were risk-adjusted mortality, complications, and patient safety indices, core measures mean percent, 30-day risk-adjusted mortality and readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and CAHPS score (patient rating of overall hospital performance).

February, 2010 - Robert Wood Johnson, in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin Public Health Institute, released their ranking of the health status of every county in the U.S., that among the 33 counties of Oregon shows Deschutes County to be 6th in overall health outcomes (5th in mortality and 8th in morbidities) and 2nd in overall health factors.  These high ratings are due in part to the healthcare services provided in Central Oregon, and by the Cascade Healthcare system.

February 10, 2010 - St. Charles Bend may be one of the safest hospitals in the country. According to a new analysis of Medicare data by HealthGrades, patients at St. Charles Bend were less likely to die or to suffer complications from surgeries than patients in 95 percent of hospitals across the country (Table 1).  The HealthGrades rankings, now in their eighth year, are based on more than 40 million hospitalization records at all 5,000 nonfederal hospitals in the country from 2006 to 2008. The review looked at how patients fared across 26 of the most common procedures and diagnoses — from heart attacks to knee replacements.  The review found that hospitals ranking in the top 5 percent, including St._Charles, had an average 29 percent lower risk of patients dying, even after adjusting for the severity of their cases, and a 9 percent lower risk of complications, than the average hospital in the nation

January 26, 2010 - Of more than 5000 hospitals evaluated by HealthGrades, St. Charles Medical Center - Bend is one of only two hospitals in Oregon and six in the Northwest Pacific (Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Oregon) that received a Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. These hospitals had lower risk-adjusted mortality and lower inhospital complications than all other hospitals and had to have star ratings in at least 19 of the 26 HealthGrades procedures and diagnoses using MedPAR data. HealthGrades selected the top 269 hospitals on the list (which represents the top 5% of all hospitals) (Table 2).  Forbes.com_reported_the_results.

August 10, 2009 - Cascade Healthcare Community Hospital System is ranked in the top 50 hospital systems nationwide, along with the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Henry Ford Hospital system, by Thomson Reuters.  Only three other hospitals systems achieved this distinction among west coast states: two in California, one in Washington and no others in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota or Wyoming.  The national total of systems evaluated was 252.  (Table 3)
